In no particular order, these are some things any healthy eater should keep on hand at all times. The key to eating healthy is having access to good food. The key to being able to cook good healthy (quick) food at home is to have a well-stocked pantry with all your go-to items! Make sure to add these to your weekly grocery list to increase your opportunities for healthy eating.
Lentils
Brown Rice
Quinoa
Canned beans (chick peas, black beans, white beans, red beans)
Thai curry paste
Plant milk (almond, soy, and/or coconut)
Diced tomatoes
Potatoes: Yukon Gold and Sweet
Onions and garlic
Balsamic vinegar
Remember – what you see, is what you eat. How often have you stood at the precipice of hunger, ready to dive into the first thing you can find in front of you? How often do you stroll to the kitchen or pantry, open the doors, and just stare? Inevitably, you’ll grab something in front of you, and chow down, whether it’s the healthiest choice or not. Check out this pantry in the picture below. Look at all the choices there… Wouldn’t you dive in to some of them even if you shouldn’t?
I can understand the argument that it can be challenging to eat healthy when you eat out. There’s no question that you give up most of your control when you eat out, so you don’t even know what you’re deciding to eat sometimes. At home, you have 100% control. If it’s not there, you can’t eat it. So, don’t tempt yourself when you’re at home. Stack the odds in your favor and stock your pantry the healthy way.
Best of all – no animals were harmed in the stocking of a vegan pantry! Now that’s something to feel good about.
